What a cantor actually does

A cantor is a liturgical minister, not a performer. Put simply, the cantor is the person who helps everyone else sing. The cantor sings the verses of the Responsorial Psalm, intones the Gospel Acclamation, and leads the congregation through the hymns and the sung parts of the Mass so your guests know when to join in and feel confident doing so.

This role has a clear place in the Church’s worship. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal describes the value of a cantor to lead and sustain the people’s singing, and of a psalmist to sing the psalm. At your wedding, that means the music keeps the whole church praying together, rather than leaving your guests to listen from the pews.

A good cantor is someone your guests barely notice as a “singer” at all. They simply find themselves singing. That is what we aim for.

Two ways to have a cantor

Cantor with accompaniment. One musician who sings and plays at the same time, usually at the piano or keyboard. It is simple, prayerful and economical, and works beautifully for a smaller Mass or a Liturgy of the Word.

Cantor and accompanist. A cantor who can give full attention to leading the singing, with a separate pianist, organist or guitarist. This is the classic arrangement for a Catholic wedding, and the one we suggest most often. The accompaniment can be fuller, and the cantor can stand at the ambo for the psalm while the music continues around them.

Both need just one month’s notice, and each contribution is a total that includes rehearsal, transport, sheet music and coordination with your parish.

When a cantor is the right choice

A cantor isn’t a “smaller” option so much as a different one. It is often the best fit when:

• Your Mass is intimate. For a smaller congregation, a single voice leading the singing feels natural and unforced.
• Your wedding is a Liturgy of the Word. When one of you isn’t Catholic, the celebration is often a Liturgy of the Word rather than a Mass, with fewer sung moments. A cantor with an accompanist usually suits it well. Our mixed-marriage music guide explains the differences.
• Your parish has its own organist. If the parish can provide an accompanist, you may only need a cantor. Ask your parish what is available.
• You’re working to a tighter budget. A cantor is our most economical wedding arrangement, and still gives your wedding properly led, prayerful music. And if the contribution is still a difficulty, please write to us.
• Your date is close. With one month’s notice, a cantor is the arrangement we can most often confirm.

Who sings the Responsorial Psalm?

At a Catholic wedding, the Responsorial Psalm is sung after the first reading. The cantor, or psalmist, sings the verses and the congregation sings the response. Under the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, it is preferable that the psalm be sung, at least the people’s response.

Couples are sometimes asked to choose the psalm from those in the Order of Celebrating Matrimony, usually together with their readings. Your parish may guide this choice. Once you’ve chosen, we’ll prepare a setting that your guests can pick up easily on first hearing.

Preparing your music together

Most couples aren’t sure where to begin with the music, and that’s perfectly normal. We’ll guide you through it step by step.

Once your date is confirmed, we’ll talk through your celebration: whether it’s a Mass or a Liturgy of the Word, which parts your parish would like sung, and any hymns that matter to you. From there we’ll suggest music for each moment, with a short note on why it fits. You’re welcome to change anything, and if you have a favourite hymn we don’t already sing, we’ll learn it.

We’ll then share the final music list with your parish music coordinator, so everyone is working from the same page. Your cantor rehearses the full programme ahead of the day, including a psalm setting that suits your readings. On the day, we arrive early for a sound check and a quick word with the priest about cues. By the time you walk down the aisle, every note is prepared.

Cantor or choir?

A cantor leads your congregation’s singing. A choir adds harmony and a fuller sound, and can sing pieces of its own at moments like communion. Both serve the liturgy well.
